A deeper look at Rebecca
My first week at Millwood Impact was filled with meeting some of the key individuals that share the same passion and vision of raising up healthy confident youth and families. It’s clear that this community wants nothing but the best and their willingness to work together will only take this mission further. As I reminisce about the work and experiences that have led me here today, I am so excited for my role as the Communication Director at Millwood Impact.
I grew up in San Diego California, with two immigrant parents striving for an opportunity. Being the first generation came with its challenges but also some key things that have molded me into the person I am today. Some of the earliest memories I have are working with my grandma and mom at the swap meet. If you're not familiar with a swap meet, it's a space where all different types of goods are sold such as; clothing, food, and services.
Swap meets hold a special place in my heart, it’s the space where I learned the importance of work ethic, valuing customers, and providing a service that is beyond selling a product. I learned how to work as a team, and connect with all types of individuals. My swap meet days taught me to care not only about the product, but more importantly, to the needs and their context. Everyone has a story and I want to pay attention to who they are and why they are there.
Fast forward a few years my husband, Jamal and I moved to Spokane, Wa with our hearts ready to connect with our new community and serve. I later was offered a position at a local non-profit that started my four years of experience with at-risk youth. I fell in love with the nonprofit world of inviting community members to take ownership of the strengths they could offer to make a difference in their neighborhood.
I’ve learned the importance of investing in individuals and the effects of empowering people to see their strengths and abilities. How the power of mentorships can help create a ripple effect in not one but multiple individuals. I have faith that Millwood Impact is the start to helping communities truly understand the power they have in changing and shifting lives.
As I lean into my position as Communication Director, I’m excited to learn, listen and engage with what this community needs. To work with my coworkers and balance our gifts of pushing this mission forward and investing in youth and families. I believe the best is yet to come!
