about the garden
Our goal is to foster a healthy environment where anyone can learn to grow their own food and participate in community through gardening. We also work to promote biodiversity & habitat creation by encouraging nature-friendly practices and build habitats for pollinators and other wildlife.
Stewardship of the land
The Millwood Community Garden is located at 3800 North Argonne, which is owned by Inland Empire Paper. They have graciously given us stewardship of the land and have done so for many years. Our plan is to utilize best practices of permaculture to stack functions and promote a healthy ecosystem. Mary Bishop, a Permaculture Consultant has been extremely helpful in creating a plan that is realistic and attainable. You can see that plan here.
History
We are not the first and will not be the last to cultivate this land. There were native tribes, including the Spokane and likely many others that inhabited these lands and for generations, a farmer grew pumpkins on the land, which is why the garden was called “The Pumpkin Patch Community Garden” for many years. We hope to honor those who went before and we hope that you would join us in writing this next chapter!
Community Building
We encourage the community to participate in the garden by hosting educational events, supporting gardening grants and a committee for ongoing planning. We focus on building relationships with our neighbors and other local gardening organization like Master Gardeners, Mission Meadows Community Garden, Growing Neighbors and The WSU Extension.
